A Day Without A Bag December 20

This came from Jessica Belsky from Heal the Bay. We thought it was an important message to get out.

Santa’s got a brand new bag. A reusable one!

When you’re out shopping this December 20, refuse plastic or paper grocery bags and instead use reusable totes.

A coalition of community groups and retailers — like Ralphs, Whole Foods, 99 Cents Only and Bed Bath & Beyond — are holding a countywide event called “A Day Without A Bag” to bring awareness to consumers about the impact of plastic and paper bags on our environment.

Fewer than 5% of plastic grocery bags are recycled each year in Los Angeles, so the remainder clogs precious landfill, litters public spaces and harms animal life when the bags blow into waterways. Paper bags, while biodegradable, still require vast amounts of fossil fuels and water to produce, distribute and collect for disposal.

So if you’re out shopping in Eagle Rock that day, don’t take a bag! And let the store owner know why.

You can get a free reusable tote at The Grove in Los Angeles’ Fairfax district at 11 a.m. Nearly a dozen other events will be held throughout the county that day. Local environmental groups will conduct on-site workshops to educate consumers.

The following communities are officially participating in or supporting “A Day Without a Bag”: County of Los Angeles, City of Los Angeles, Long Beach, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Norwalk, Downey, Culver City, Covina, Carson, Malibu, West Hollywood, Redondo Beach, Calabasas, Rolling Hills Estates, Lomita, Bell Gardens, Compton, El Monte and El Segundo.

The following community groups are supporting the event: Heal the Bay, Environment California, Surfrider Foundation, Santa Monica Baykeeper, Earth Resource Foundation, Californians Against Waste, Urban Semillas, Ballona Creek Renaissance, Anahuak, Pacific American Volunteer Association, Green Sangha and Coejl
